What is Transfer Guess?

Transfer Guess shows you a real transfer — the fee, the selling club, the buying club — with the player's name stripped out, and asks who moved. You get three guesses, plus three optional clues: the year, the position and the nationality. The game is really about calibrating to era: fees that felt astronomical in 2008 look routine now, and the market has not moved evenly across positions.

How to play Transfer Guess

  1. You are shown a real football transfer — the fee, the selling club, and the buying club.
  2. Type the name of the player who made the move. Surnames are enough.
  3. You have 3 guesses. A third wrong name ends the game.
  4. Three clues — Year, Position, Nation — open in order whenever you want them.
  5. Opening a clue never costs you a guess, but a solve is reported by how many you opened — solve with none for a perfect game.

Transfer Guess strategy

Date the deal first, name the player second. A twenty-five million pound fee was a marquee signing in 2005, an ordinary squad addition by 2018, and something close to a bargain now — so the number and the two clubs together usually pin the move to a particular window before you have thought about any names. Once you have the window, ask who that buying club was signing at the time and the shortlist collapses. A clue never costs you a guess, but opening even one rules out a perfect game — so if the fee and the clubs already point to someone, try that name before you open Year.

  • Use the fee to date the move — a GBP30m fee in 2010 would be GBP80m+ today.
  • The club pairing is a clue in itself — a well-worn route between two teams narrows the field fast.
  • Free transfers and loan moves are in the mix too — a small fee doesn't mean a small name.
